Granada - Up, Up, Up to the Albayzin

The Albayzin neighborhood of Granada, Spain sits at the top of a steep hill.  We had to expend a bit of effort to get there but were definitely rewarded by amazing views once we did.
The path up into the Albayzin neighborhood is lined with white-washed houses that seem to shine on a sunny day.
I loved the precarious window box on this home.
We spotted Granada's signature pomegranate on a drain pipe.
Partway up the hill, we spotted a beige bell tower.
Moorish influence on the architecture was readily apparent.
I loved the purple accents on this house as we stopped in this quiet square to catch our breath on the way to the top.
We were following rather vague directions to the viewpoint above but there was no mistaking that we were on the right track when we saw this and read in our guidebook: turn right at the house with the two cats.
We wound our way up and up and then up some more.  At one point, we weren't sure which way to go but this stray dog seemed to be going in the same direction.  We ended up following him quite a distance and he didn't lead us astray!
We made it to the top!  We walked through Placeta de San Miguel and noted the variety of cafes lining the square.  We made a mental note to stop here for lunch.
The most stunning part, of course, were the sweeping views of the city below.  Here we caught a glimpse of Granada's cathedral.
The roads were extremely narrow up here but that didn't stop the Granada City Tour tram from pushing through.  We huddled in a doorway and sucked in our guts to leave them enough room to pass and not get run over.
More white-washed building lined the Plaza St. Nicholas.  This is why our walk up to the top of the Albayzin really paid off.  Plaza St. Nicholas features stunning, unobstructed views of the Alhambra, Spain's most famous Moorish palace and fortress.
Here are just a few of the views we captured as the sun began to set.
We concluded our walk by retracing our steps downward as the shadows grew longer on the day.
We caught one last glimpse of the Alhambra peeking out from between the jumble of homes in the Albayzin before calling it a day.
