See Liverpool in a Day

Explore Liverpool in a day
How far is Liverpool from Manchester? Manchester to Liverpool is an easy one hour ride by train so it’s easy to combine Manchester and Liverpool into one weekend city break or do a day trip from one city to the other. What is there to do in Liverpool in a Day? Read on to find out.

Admire Liverpool Station

The Liverpool station was impressive with a sweeping glass roof and Victorian-era embellishments.

Walk Along the Mersey

One of the first things I noticed was the dolphin encrusted lampposts along the Mersey. It made me think of the seahorses on the lamps along the River Liffey in Dublin. I liked the view of the Radio City Tower behind St. Georges Hall -- a bit of old and new juxtaposed. Majestic lions sat in front of St. Georges Hall. Did you know that Liverpool is UNESCO World Heritage-rated because of the city's maritime history?

The Cunard Building

Liverpool architecture is quite lovely -- especially when reflected in the harbour. We passed the Cunard Building which was also quite impressive. On a subsequent business trip in the UK, I had the opportunity to visit Liverpool's Cunard Building. The interior felt quite posh with sweeping staircases and modern chandeliers. Ghostly images of ships like the Titanic and Lusitania hovered on the walls reminding us of some of the sad history associated with the cruise line. The Queen Mary 2 happened to be in port that day and the whole town seemed to be abuzz. I felt lucky to get a sense of both the past and future of this iconic cruise line.

Breakfast at Cafe Tabac

We had arrived quite early in Liverpool and once again sought breakfast as a first order of business. We stopped at Cafe Tabac on Bold Street. They do great oatmeal (porridge).

Browse Liverpool’s Chinatown

Liverpool boasts a very impressive Chinatown gate even though Chinatown itself is rather modest. Keep an eye out for Liverpool street art in the area.

Liverpool Waterfront and Albert Dock

The waterfront in Liverpool is quite lovely and tourist friendly. We took a long stroll along the river. We saw people practicing a sport that seemed a bit like water polo but played with kayaks. I did a quick Google search and the sport does indeed seem to be called kayak polo. We soon approached Albert Dock, the hub of tourist activity in Liverpool. We took a quick pass through for now and spent more time at Albert Dock later in the afternoon.

SIDEWALK SAFARI SPOTLIGHT: Looking for other great places to visit in the UK with a similar maritime history?

Mathew Street

We walked back into the main part of Liverpool toward Mathew Street where the Beatles got their start. You can see the Fab Four smiling down from a nearby hotel. The Cavern Club features a brick wall with the names of all the artists who have played there over the years (including the Beatles).

Lunch on Bold Street and Shopping at Bluecoat Art and Craft Centre

We opted for cheap pub grub for lunch at Yate's along Bold Street. We had a good vantage point and could watch the people go by as we ate and downed a pint. We stopped at the Bluecoat art and craft centre on our way back toward Albert Dock. I liked the rather haphazard birdhouses in the courtyard outside. In the shop at the Bluecoat art gallery, I saw a familiar sight from when we lived in San Francisco, a sculpture by Thomas Hill. He often has his work on display at Velvet da Vinci on Polk St. in San Francisco.

Merseyside Maritime Museum

We took some time to explore the Merseyside Maritime Museum. The main exhibit focused on the shipwrecks of the Titanic, Lusitania, and Empress of Ireland. There was also a good display about Shackleton and his harrowing voyage to the Antarctic plus the unique "Hello Sailor" (Gay life on the ocean wave).

SIDEWALK SAFARI SPOTLIGHT: Liverpool has a hard-working reputation. For a similar vibe in other cities in the UK spend 2 days in Glasgow Scotland or a weekend in Birmingham England with an added bonus of some great eating and drinking opportunities

The Beatles Story

We visited The Beatles Story near the end of the day in Liverpool. The Beatles museum stays open a bit later than most other attractions and shops. We were able to pop in to The Beatles Story at about 5 pm and stay until they closed at 7 pm. The exhibit was detailed and fascinating. A complimentary audio guide was included with the (rather expensive) price of admission (13.95 GBP at the time of our visit). The tour was well worth it. The memorabilia and history were quite detailed. I was starting to worry that we'd run short on time but the exhibit ends when the Beatles broke up in 1970. There is very little about the drama of their solo careers and John Lennon's assassination.

Overall Impressions of Liverpool in a Day

Liverpool reminded me a bit of a city in the US or Australia. I think it was because of the big open air shopping mall that dominates the city centre. We had drinks and dinner at Las Iguanas at Liverpool One. The food and drinks were really refreshing after a long day of exploration.

We decided to take the bus back to our hotel near the airport. It was really inexpensive and super convenient. Thus concludes our whirlwind city break in the UK with a day in Manchester and a day in Liverpool. It's amazing how much a person can see and do in just 48 hours. We covered 7+ miles on foot in a single day out and about in Liverpool.
