23 Ways to Do Dublin in a Day

Dublin in a Day: Molly Malone Statue
There are so many ways to spend a day in Dublin City. I've called Dublin home for nearly a decade and during the time I've lived in Ireland I have experienced a wide range of things to do for every taste. I've explored every corner of Dublin, my adopted city, and today I'm going to share 23 ways to do a day in Dublin. Pick one if you are visiting Dublin for a short break or spending a few days in Dublin on a business trip. Mix and match several one day Dublin itineraries if you have more time or are a repeat visitor. This travel guide covers Dublin's iconic tourist attractions, but more importantly, the lesser known non-touristy places that one discovers over a period of years. Read on to learn more about the variety of Dublin days out you can expect to find and start planning your trip to Ireland's capital! I have personally experienced and can recommend all the activities, points of interest, and places to eat in Dublin that you'll find below.

Getting Around Dublin

Dublin is a compact city and it is easy to get from one end to the other on foot in well under an hour. For Dublin points of interest that are a little further afield, Dublin Bus and the Luas tram criss-cross the city. DART trains are great for day trips up and down the coast from Greystones south of Dublin to Howth and Malahide in the north. Dublin visitors can buy a one to seven day Leap Visitor Card to use on all public transportation services for a fixed price (10 EUR for 1 day, 40 EUR for 7 days at the time of writing). If you are short on time or your legs are tired, taxis are widely available and can be hailed on the street (expect to pay the fare in cash). Install the MyTaxi app and for a 2 EUR pick-up fee, you can guarantee a ride whenever and wherever you need it. MyTaxi is the only way to pay for a taxi with a credit card. Hail immediately or prebook hours or days in advance.

The Perfect Formula for a Day Out in Dublin City

Dublin in a day: pint of Guinness

In my opinion, there is a perfect formula for one day in Dublin:
  1. Coffee and/or breakfast
  2. Morning Activities
  3. Lunch
  4. Afternoon Activities
  5. Pub Stop
  6. Dinner
  7. Evening Fun
All the Dublin City itineraries that I will share follow this format. I've also added an indicator about how ambitious a particular itinerary is:
  • Leisurely: No need to get up super-early to start this itinerary which is always good if you experienced a little too much of Dublin's famous craic the night before. Take your time exploring the sights on these itineraries or take detours that you discover on your own in the process of following my suggestions.
  • Intermediate: You should be able to comfortably fit in the activities recommended even if you don't get an early start. There is a fair amount of walking involved in these itineraries to get from place to place.
  • Ambitious: Lots to see plus a lot of walking. Make sure to get an early start or you won't make it to everything on the list.
Each of the itineraries below includes which types of people the day out may appeal to based on their interests. You'll also find an outline of the Dublin day out and a link to a more detailed itinerary post which includes an interactive map highlighting each point of interest in that one day itinerary and links to further information.
