Dublin City Spectacular - Top 10 Memories Spanning 5 Years Of Street Performance

Dublin City Spectacular - Where's Wally World Record Attempt
Summer is festival season in Dublin and one of my favorite festivals has to be the Dublin City Spectacular (formerly known as the Street Performance World Championships). The festival organizers got in touch recently and this year's installment promises to be the biggest and best yet (see below for the full press release). Anticipation of this year's festival inspired me to reminisce about my top memories from years past. Check out some of the mind blowing performances and other activities below. I can't wait to see what this year's festival has in store!

SIDEWALK SAFARI SPOTLIGHT: Dublin has so much to offer. Check out our huge list of one day Dublin City itineraries for ideas.

1. Where's Wally?

Dublin City Spectacular - Where's Wally World Record Attempt
My absolute favorite memory from the Street Performance World Championships is participating in the Where's Wally World Record Attempt. There was something just so much fun about dressing up in red stripes with more than 10,000 other people. And we nailed it! It was indeed a historic occasion and one for the record books.

2. Impromptu Hip Hop Street Art (Japanese Style!) with Yukinko Akira

Dublin City Spectacular - Yukinko Akira
The Dublin City Spectacular attracts street artists from all over the world. Yukinko Akira from Japan is another one of my all time faves. Part carving, part spray paint, part hip hop dance performance, Yukinko needs to be seen to be believed. So talented!

3. The Boxing Mime

Dublin City Spectacular - Fraser Hooper
Fraser Hooper, the boxing mime, simply made us smile. He set up a boxing ring, picked out an unsuspecting member of the audience and proceeded to comically spar with them, all while staying totally silent.

4. USA Breakdancers

Dublin City Spectacular - USA Breakdancers
The USA Breakdancers brought their A-game, pulling off some fantastic moves alongside Merrion Square.

5. Art Guitar Giveaways

Dublin City Spectacular - Art Guitar at the City SoulPicnic
Back in 2014, The Dublin City Spectacular expanded beyond the Street Performance World Championships to bring us the City Soul Picnic. As part of the festival, the organizers sold raffle tickets to benefit children's music-focused charities with a number of art guitars as prizes. Would you believe I won one?! I always think back fondly on the festival whenever I look at my guitar which has pride of place alongside our living room mantle.

6. Great Gigs

The City Soul Picnic in Merrion Square also featured a number of talented local musicians. The Dublin City Spectacular seems to get better every year!

7. Mime Magic Breakdancing and Puppetry with Funny Bones

Dublin City Spectacular - Funny Bones
Funny Bones was another of my all time favorite acts. They combined a mixture of miming, breakdancing and puppetry into a magical performance.

8. The Book of Love

Dublin City Spectacular - Lindsay Benner
Lindsay Benner put on am imaginative performance in 2011; acting out the stages of a relationship with feats of increasing daring.

9. I'm a little Teapot with Senmaru

Dublin City Spectacular - Senmaru
Senmaru, another Japanese street artist left us all in awe as he juggled a teapot on a stick held between his teeth. Wut?!

10. The Space Cowboy

Dublin City Spectacular - Space Cowboy
Most of the acts in the Street Performance World Championships and broader City Spectacular change every year. However, there is one performer that comes year after year: the award winning Space Cowboy. His sword swallowing routine is not to be missed and will leave you amazing and in fear for his life!

Here are more details about the upcoming Laya Healthcare City Spectacular that is scheduled to take place in Dublin from July 8th - 10th this summer. We can't wait!

Ireland’s biggest free summer festival that brought you 14,000 people breaking the Where’s Wally World Record, 1,500 people bouncing on space hoppers, a custard pie throwing championship, rainbow disco and hundreds of jaw-dropping street performers from all over the world; is back this -July 8th-10th in Merrion Square Dublin- July 16th-17th in Fitzgerald Park Cork with over 250 spectacular shows, workshops and activities for all ages.

International street performer line up includes; reptile-tattooed sideshow superstar Lizardman, ‘the human knot’, contortionist Alakazam, award winning hula-hoopist Lisa Lottie and aerial acrobats Tumble Circus. In 2016, a big focus at the festival is good food. We have created a dedicated food festival within the City Spectacular called ‘Just-Eat Street’ which will see demonstrations, fun live performances and of course a wide variety of yummy cuisine from around the world.

Not only do we have a feast of food, but back again this year we have a banquet for the brain called the ESB Spark Your Imagination area. This is a creative hub for children to inspire, educate and feed the imagination. Here you’ll find a feast for the senses with creative writing and performance workshops from Fighting Words, fun and games from Imaginosity, Dublin Children’s Museum, Doktor Kaboom’s LIVE WIRE electricity show and French wooden games for all to enjoy. The makings of many light bulb moments!

Entry to this family friendly festival is completely Free of charge.

All activities are FREE and the full programme will be listed from May on www.cityspectacular.com
