Photo Safari through the West of Amsterdam

The train from Haarlem dropped us off in the western part of Amsterdam where we'd be staying.  The hotel prices here were much more reasonable than those in the city centre.  We walked a good 20-30 minutes from the train station to our hotel.  It was worth it though to see these amazing oystercatchers along the way.

Our route also paralleled some fine canals ringed in spring greenery.
We soon arrived at the WestCord Art Hotel and we could immediately see why it was given this name.
After settling in, we decided to take a walk through the largely residential neighborhood near the hotel.  We slipped into this community with homes surrounding park spaces.
I really liked this colorful sculpture in the center.  The art theme continues...
We popped out the other side and found ourselves alongside a large canal.
We soon spotted some really cool birds...Crested Grebes!
A party barge was parked at canal's edge.
Sitting on a tire close to the boat at water's edge was this coot.  I'd never seen a coot out of the water before and I didn't realize they had such crazy lobed feet.  So cool.
Continuing on, we crossed a canal bridge...
...and were soon surrounded by Amsterdam's signature canal houses.
One was even labeled 'Noach's Arck' (I assume this translates to Noah's Ark).
We wandered a bit off the beaten path and discovered something of a petting zoo in the heart of Amsterdam.
We were getting closer to Centraal Station and the heart of Amsterdam at this point.  It was cool to see these gilded musical instruments decorating the underside of the railroad bridge.
We finally made it to our target destination, Harlemmerdijk, where we hoped we'd find something to eat. The neighborhood is known for good and inexpensive ethnic cuisine.
We walked past Padi, an Indonesian Restaurant, and were drawn in.
The place was a bit of a 'hole in the wall' but there were lots of folks eating there.
We rehydrated with a beer after our long walk.
We took time to admire the rustic decor.
We opted to try a sampler plate (effectively a mini 'Rice Table' all on one plate).  This way, we got to try a bit of everything.
I loaded on a healthy dose of chili sauce to kick things up a notch.
Overall, we're glad we gave Padi a chance.  The meal was a nice way to end a long photo safari walk through the western part of Amsterdam.
