Haarlem - Teylers Museum

Teylers Museum is an ideal rainy day destination.  Situated in Haarlem, just a short train ride outside of Amsterdam, it's the oldest museum in the Netherlands.  Teylers Museum features an eclectic mix of exhibits on natural history, history of science, art by the grand masters, and much more.  We were drawn into a series of small interconnected rooms.

We had a handy free audio guide to direct us through the exhibits.
The first exhibit featured bones and fossils from many creatures long since extinct.
We listened to a fascinating story about this particular set of fossils relating to a pair of scientific rivals.  One of the guys wanted to discredit the other and he made and planted these faux fossils for his nemesis to find.  The truth eventually came out after a series of very excited publications.  Note that these 'fossils' are raised, rather than indented, a dead giveaway that they are fakes.
We walked past cabinet after cabinet of fossils but none had as compelling a story as the ones above.
Fancy geodes sat under glass along the path through the room.
We stopped for a moment to admire this ancient fish and mollusks before heading on to an exhibit covering scientific equipment.
A massive electrostatic generator filled the space. It took me back to my high school science project where I built a Van de Graaff generator with help from my grandpa.  Ours wasn't nearly this big ;-)
We saw an elaborate sound generator.
I loved this glass spiked with uranium that made the candles and glassware glow yellow.
Teylers Museum is actually housed in a spectacular building which is a site to behold in itself.  We wandered into an exhibit featuring chunks of various minerals but our attention was constantly drawn upward to the elaborate ceiling.
Our next destination was a hall full of impressive paintings by Dutch masters.
One of the paintings on display featured Teylers Museum!  I knew that room looked familiar!
Another room featured old coins.  It was fascinating to look closely at the images stamped into the metal.  This one featured two decapitated bodies!
Retracing our steps, we detoured into a room filled with luminescent materials.
In the entry hall, a good bit of light was coming in through the dome.  Might the rain be stopping?
Unfortunately no...  The rain was falling harder than ever.  We quickly raised our umbrellas and dashed off to find a place for lunch.
