Haarlem Eats - Lunch, Tea and Cake

Despite the rain, we took a moment to admire the canals running through the center of Haarlem.

We bid farewell to Teylers Museum and went in search for a warm and dry place to eat lunch.
We saw a roaring fire through the window of Dijkers and thought it would do nicely for lunch.
We went inside and warmed up with a lovely cup of tea...
...served with an adorable jug of hot milk.
For lunch, we opted for a Dutch favorite, bitterballen, deep fried balls that are gooey on the inside and go perfectly with a bit of mustard.  I normally don't like mustard but it matches so well with bitterballen that I forget that fact and dip away.
We also ordered a club sandwich...
...and a sandwich featuring warm goat's cheese, nuts, and honey.  Yum.
We were even treated to some classic Dutch coffee candy (Hopjes) when they brought the bill.
The rain was still coming down quite hard.  We toughed it out and did a bit more exploration.
We particularly enjoyed wandering down the more residential side alleys in Haarlem.  It helped us imagine what it might be like to live here and commute into Amsterdam.
We admired more of the local architecture including this church...
...once again we found ourselves looking up at the cathedral.
This house seemed to perfectly typify old school Dutch architecture.
We decided to make a pit stop at Bij Babette for more tea and a piece of cake.
We were served off of delicate mismatched china cups.
We were seated near the back with a good vantage point to survey the scene around us.
We tried a slice of cake washed down with a pot of tea.
The tea came with a timer to make sure it was brewed perfectly.
Voila!  Worth the wait...
We wished we'd had more time to spend in Haarlem so we could sample more sweets at Bij Babette.  Alas, we had to make do with a just a single sweet treat.
We dashed to the train station, picked up our bags and hopped on the train to Amsterdam.  Even though we were just in town for the weekend, it almost felt like we were Dutch commuters.
