Amsterdam - Haarlem in the Rain

A weekend in Amsterdam when the weather is nice is always a welcome treat.  April is known for torrential downpours though and this trip was no exception.  We could tell is it was going to be a wet one when we saw this cyclist brandishing an umbrella.
We were definitely going to get wet although we tried not to let a little bit (or a lot!) of rain ruin our fun.  When we landed at Schipol Airport, our first order of business was to find the bus to Haarlem.  Haarlem is a medium-sized commuter city close to Amsterdam.  We walked from the bus stop to the train station to drop off our bags in the coin operated lockers.  The train station itself was charming with all sorts of dark wood, tiles, and other period features.   It had one of the nicest bathrooms I've ever seen in a train station environment.
We could only dawdle in the train station for so long before we would have to face the wet and soggy town.  It was definitely stormy in Haarlem with bicycles strewn everywhere.
Despite the rain, we took a moment to admire the classic Dutch architecture of the town.
We popped into a chocolate shop where pots of fondue in various decadent flavors beckoned to us.
We looked out onto the scene from the relative dryness of the storefront.
An inviting garden stood inaccessible behind a locked gate.
I couldn't resist poking my camera through the fence to have a look.  The one advantage of the rain was that everything was nice and green for our visit.
We soon arrived at the main town square which was anchored by the cathedral.  A medium-sized market was bustling with locals doing their shopping.
We admired all sorts of products from fresh flowers...
...to asparagus...
...to pineapples!
We spied a stall baking and selling bread fresh on the premises and walked over to check it out.
Looking up, we admired the architecture of the impressive cathedral.
I liked how we could see the traditional gables of the Dutch buildings lining the square peeking out above the market.  This place had great atmosphere.
Moving on, we checked out the small historic shops nestled behind the cathedral.
Symbols in the cobbled street hinted at each place's purpose.  In this case scissors (and the prominent barber pole) made it clear where to go if we were in need of a haircut in Haarlem.
The rain was starting to come down even more heavily now.  It was time to find some shelter indoors at Teylers Museum, the oldest in Holland.
