A Stroll Around Hamburg City Centre

We crossed another of Hamburg's many bridges and made our way toward the city centre.
En route, we spotted some groove-tastic sculptures.
The manhole covers showed off scenes from the free and Hanseatic city of Hamburg.  The Hanseatic League was a loose collection of trading partners in the area.  We'd already visited a number of other Hanseatic cities including Gdansk and Tallinn.
We were awed by the sight of the Rathaus.
We continued on and popped into a cheap but delicious bakery.
A fountain stood silently near the main shopping street.
I was intrigued by this store, Hoernin, with whimsical revolvers painted on the sign.
Dramatic statues lined the green space between thoroughfares.
Restaurants seemed a bit hard to come by in Hamburg's city centre.  We ascended to the top floor of the Galeria Kaufhof where we found a selection of delicious options.  We tried soup, coffee, and a slice of chocolate and pear kuchen.
We also tried a type of pot roast with boiled potatoes and cabbage.  It was a filling meal to fortify our afternoon of exploration.
There were interesting statues wherever we turned in Hamburg.  From this surly looking angel...
...to a man with two buckets of water (we'd see this motif again and again around town)...
...to a half-man, half-horse ready to leap down upon shoppers entering this posh arcade.
We circled back around to the Rathaus and decided to take a look inside this time.
Impressive arches connected thick columns.
We went outside to the interior courtyard and admired the fountain centerpiece.
The facade of the Rathaus was quite ornate and guided the eye upward.
Finishing our quick tour, we stepped outside and made our way to the Außenalster.  Colorful flags lined the path.
A fountain spouted in the middle of this artificial lake within the city limits.
We made a quick detour to the Nivea store.  We were expecting some great bargains but in reality, the store was a tourist attraction with prices to match.  We ended up getting our Nivea skin care products at the local supermarket for the same or lower price.
Our final stop of the afternoon was Hanse Viertel, a local shopping arcade.
We discovered a store called Paulsen which boasted all sorts of sweet treats include Lebkuchen.
Natural light streamed into the arcade through glass arches.
We soaked up the sun from this warm interior spot and then set our sights back to Hotel Madison.
