Dublin to Cork and Back in Less than 24 Hours - Part 1

We recently spent less than 24 hours in Cork.  Why?...to support our friend's entry in the Cork Film Festival.  We took the train down from Dublin to Cork and had a couple hours in the late afternoon to walk around before the show.  I liked these stenciled kitties.
We arrived at Hotel Isaacs and were surprised to discover 'The Cork Waterfall' outside our window!  It made a really soothing sound.  Too bad the waterfall is man made and they turn off the water overnight.  It would have really helped us fall asleep, I think.
We left the hotel through this dark passage and hit the pavement.
We walked into the center of town and were excited to see banners promoting the film festival waving overhead.
We passed an old fashioned news cryer...
...alongside a memorial to a newspaper office that once stood on this site.
I was intrigued by this sign for Mutton Lane so we turned in.
A lovely mural adorned the wall of the narrow alley.
Residents of Cork apparently have a sense of humor: Cork Mural Completed... featured prominently in the mural itself.  This is big news!
I also like how they worked the mural around various embedded elements.  You can see a guy shoving a screwdriver into a socket and frying near a 'Danger Keep Away' sign.  Love it!
An entrance to The English Market lies at the far end of Mutton Lane.  We popped inside and had a quick browse.  We couldn't resist picking up a few animal shaped chocolates for our friend -- a lovable dog features prominently in her short film, Oscar.
Various other arcades branch off from the English Market.  I liked this Market Parade.  'Parades' always sound so festive.
Tis the season...The English Market had some nicely packaged Christmas Puddings on offer.  We managed to resist temptation though.
On our way to the theatre, I saw more evidence of wry Corkonian humor in this sign about the lottery: 2.5 million is better than a slap with a wet mackerel!
We arrived at the Gate Multiplex for the film festival screening where we saw 8 short movies filmed in Cork, including our favorite (no bias here!) - Oscar.
