Off the Beaten Path in Prague

We found ourselves unexpectedly in Prague this Spring.  Due to a planned Aer Lingus strike, our flight to Berlin was at risk so we ended up departing a day earlier to fly to Prague instead.  Our ultimate destination was Dresden and Leipzig which are halfway between Berlin and Prague so we were able to salvage the trip.  Instead of looking at this detour as an inconvenience and allowing our mood to sour about the change in plans, we looked at this as an opportunity to see someplace that we wouldn't have otherwise.  Admittedly, we did not have the best time during our last trip to Prague in 2009 when my Sidewalk Safari cam went missing and was assumed stolen.  Again, we looked at this trip as the opportunity to give Prague a second chance. We boarded a bus from the airport and transferred onto the tram.
We were whisked away to Pražského povstání station.
We walked about 10 minutes through a largely residential neighborhood to get to our Bed and Breakfast, Lida Guesthouse.
Lida Guesthouse was an imposing home behind a fence atop the hill.
Jan and his wife have been running the place for nearly 20 years (before Prague was fashionable for tourists).  The rooms are clean and comfortable with bright yellow accents.
We sat down for coffee and a slice of poppy cake and Jan gave us some good advice about things to see in the city that were a bit off the tourist track.
We wandered down a large flight of stairs.
We discovered a Czech wine bar at the bottom and were enticed inside.
The inside was filled with all sorts of curiosities like this bronze bust...
...typewriters and luggage...
...and old musical instruments.
We selected a glass of domestic wine and were floored that it cost less than the equivalent of one euro.
We moved on for a walk along the Vltava River.
Personal boats lined a nearby harbour.
I particularly liked these colorful row boats.
I also liked the industrial flower motif on the fences protecting passerby from the drop down the riverbank.
The road passed through a hole bored into the hillside and we kept on going.
Further ahead, we could see the center of Prague with Prague Castle on the hill beyond.
A swan swam out to greet us.
We saw reminders of the devastating flood that hit the area in the summer of 2002.  These plaques indicating the high water mark were scarily high....
Walking further, we took note of Art Deco and Art Nouveau accents.
We chanced upon Restaurace V Podskalí and popped in for dinner.
We ordered a couple of pints to start us off.  Again, the prices were surprisingly inexpensive with most pints coming out between 1 EUR and 1.30 EUR after factoring in the exchange rate with the Czech koruna.  The Czech Republic definitely offers good value for money!
For dinner, we ate a basket of warm rolls...
...and a cup of vegetable soup.
We were seated in a sort of no-man's land between the smoking and non-smoking sections as the non-smoking part of the restaurant was full.
Next up, we had hearty bread dumplings...
...and an amazing potato pancake filled with mushrooms.
We also had green beans with bacon...
...and chicken with a cherry honey glaze.  It was all really delicious and was made more so when we considered the value we were getting.
The entire meal cost us less than 17 EUR.
After dinner, we continued our walk, trying to approach our Bed and Breakfast from a different angle.  We appreciated more of Prague's whimsical architecture along the way.
We ended up getting a bit lost.  It turns out that Vyšehrad Castle and a large hill stood in the way between us and our hotel.  We found a small pub and with a combination of broken English and miming asked the proprietor how to get where we were going.  We had to backtrack to the river but again the detour turned into an opportunity to see evening fireworks going off.  It was a fitting end to an exciting day in Prague.
