Edinburgh - From Holyrood Park to Portobello Beach

During our recent weekend in Edinburgh, our focus was on the Fringe but we decided to get up early on a Sunday morning and take a long walk through Holyrood Park and then on to Portobello Beach.  Yes Edinburgh has a beach, who knew?!  We set out from Allison House Bed and Breakfast and wound our way toward the park.  We took a fortuitous shortcut and passed through this conference center owned by the University of Edinburgh.  Some of the buildings looked like small castles with views of Arthur's Seat beyond.

We emerged from the back of the conference center and skirted around the edge of Holyrood Park.
Fields of wildflowers greeted us along the way.
Sheer cliff faces soared above us.
We had decided to take 'the high road' but we could see an alternative 'low road' through the meadow below.
 Gnarled trees dotted the landscape.
We soon caught a glimpse of Duddingston Loch and Bird Sanctuary.
Various ducks rested peacefully on the surface of the water.
We passed through a small gate and made our way down a hill to this idyllic scene.
A park bench was conveniently placed nearby to watch the birds.
It was mostly Canadian Geese on the scene.  I normally don't like them much because they are aggressive and make a big mess.  However, in this case, I really enjoyed watching them frolic in the water.
They were splashing about...
I was particularly amused by this one goose who keep rolling over and over again in the water.  They looked to be having such fun!
We climbed back up the hill and continued on our way.
We were planning to take the bus the rest of the way to Portobello but learned that it only passes by once an hour on Sundays.  Given that the bus was not due for another 25 minutes and we could likely walk the rest of the way in 30, we soldiered on on foot.  We passed through a posh residential neighborhood.
Finally emerging into Portobello, we spotted this unusual church.  The architecture almost looks Art Deco.
We knew we were getting close to the beach when we saw this bright white Bingo hall.  It somehow just looks like it belongs on the water.
Sure enough, we were right.  Just a couple blocks further on, we were greeted by cool breezes and sunny views over the water.
We had fun doing a bit of people watching on the beach.
We popped into the Beach House for a coffee and slice of cake...
...before legging it to the high street to catch the bus back to the City Center for our next Fringe show.
I love it when a plan comes together!
