New York Eats - Bagels and Brunch on the Upper West Side

We had brunch plans on the Upper West Side of New York City so decided to make a pre-brunch pilgrimage to Absolute Bagels for a dozen to take back to Ireland with us.  We always save room in our luggage for bagels.  You can't get true New York bagels anywhere else in the world.
We walked in and were greeted by an impressive array of schmears.
The line was out the door but after about 15 minutes, we arrived at the counter to place our order.
There is just something so photogenic about bagels. Bagels should definitely be front and center on your shot list on a tour of Instagrammable places in NYC.
We could see the bagels being pulled fresh from the oven.
Of course, baking is just the final step.  Boiling the dough is what makes bread a bagel.  Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
I admit, we snacked on a bagel before brunch in nearby Riverside Park.
In addition to the greenery, we admired the Art Deco high rise apartments nearby.
We made our way toward Jacob's Pickles, our brunch destination.
En route, we saw more samples of Art Deco architecture.
We arrived at Jacob's Pickles where the friend we were meeting had already put our name on the list.  Apparently, we still had over an hour to wait for a table.  It was hipster brunch dining in the City at its finest.
People were milling about everywhere and we did too.  We were beginning to get worried that we wouldn't get seated in time to eat and then head back downtown to pick up our bags and head to the airport.
Our friend did some fast talking and when he learned we'd still have to wait 30+ minutes more after already waiting an hour managed to secure us spots at the bar.
It was a sensible hour by that time so we tried one of the craft brews on tap which was ironically served by a Dublin man living in New York.  He chuckled when we told him we were flying out to Dublin that day.
I ordered the biscuit french toast.  It was a good omen when this generous jug of maple syrup appeared in front of me.
It was soon followed by this amazing plate of goodness.  French toast made from Southern buttermilk biscuits and smothered in strawberries.  So good!.
We also ordered a savory chicken biscuit sandwich with grits.
Both were fab but I was still partial to the French toast.  I don't normally have the patience to wait this long for a table but in this case, it was actually worth the wait.
With our bellies incredibly full, we made our way back to Lower Manhattan and then on to the Newark Airport, sad that our trip to New York was coming to an end but secure in the knowledge that we had a dozen bagels in our bag so the experience would live on.  If only I could export that French toast too ;-)
