Ronda - 3 Bridges and a Gorge

Ronda, Spain is best known for its three bridges spanning a deep, deep gorge.  I have to say, the town is simply 'Gorge'-ous ;-)  Here's a look at the 'new' bridge built in 1751.
Standing in the center of the new bridge, it's possible to admire the white-washed buildings clinging to the edge of the cliff.
A thin morning mist still hung low across the valley beyond.
We knew we'd be doing some serious climbing so we stopped to pick up a goyesca which turned out to be the Ronda equivalent of an 'energy bar'.  It was full of delicious fruits and nuts and drizzled with sugar.
We also couldn't resist picking up some homemade polvorones.
We passed a sign for Viajeros Romanticos.
Quotes from writers that had spent time in Ronda surrounded the central tile.  Here's one from Washington Irving's journal written in 1828.  "Last night stormy wind rain.  Look out from window.  Beautiful effect of moonlight breaking through mist on bridge.  White houses along the bank of the river ravine..."
We headed for La Casa del Rey Moro and the steps into the 'mine' that Moorish servants would use to fetch water.  We strolled the grounds and gardens.
We also admired the views across the gorge.
We soon approached a sign in Arabic pointing out the entry to the mine.
We descended a very steep and slippery staircase to the gorge floor below.
We caught reflections of the white-washed homes above in the still water.
The ascent up the stairs was a bit more challenging to negotiate but all in a day's work!  We had definitely earned a polvorone snack later.
We continued through town toward the Roman Bridge and Old Bridge beyond.
We stopped into the Roman Baths which happened to be free on the day we were there (Monday?).
Turning back, we admired the Old Bridge.
A stately gate marked the approach.
Once we had crossed the Old Bridge and got up a little higher, we could see the Roman Bridge and Old Bridge beyond.
We walked back through town.  I loved the tiled entrances of the homes in Ronda.
What?!  How did these cars manage to get up the stairs to park?
Colorful planters lined the sidewalk and we followed them until we emerged at a stately church: Santa María la Mayor.
Cobbled streets lined by white-washed homes fronted by carefully coiffed trees led us to another trail leading down around the back of Ronda.
After about a 10 minute descent, we arrived at this scenic viewpoint of the New Bridge.
The afternoon sun nearly bisected the bridge into zones of light and shadow.
What a spectacularly picturesque town!
