Cape Town - Seal Cruise at Hout Bay

On our second to last day in South Africa we awoke to blue skies.  We set out on a day trip down the Cape of Good Hope.  Our first stop was in Hout Bay where we signed ourselves up for a short trip to Seal Island.
We admired the bay while waiting for the Calypso to return.
A crafts market was conveniently set-up in the area to provide a great shopping diversion while we waited.
We finally saw the Calypso chugging into the harbour.
We scrambled aboard and spotted our first wildlife of the day - jellyfish!
We proceeded quickly through the calm waters of the harbour.
We passed in the shadow of a large distinctive mountain.
A ramshackle township spilled down the side of the hill.
We passed a bit of a breakwall and it was at this point that our captain decided to tell us that he expected rough waters ahead.  Uh oh...  It was actually smart marketing.  If they had told us this before we bought our tickets, we might have opted out as we don't have great 'sea legs'.  I soon had visions of us hanging over the side of the boat.
The surf was definitely churning but the views were worth it.
We started getting worried again about 10 minutes later when we saw whitecap waves ahead.
Fortunately, we soon learned, we had arrived at our destination!
We were distracted from the swell by the seals lounging on the island (see album and photos below).

After about 10 minutes, we turned ourselves around and chugged back toward shore.
We eyeballed the whitecaps once more with trepidation.  However, we were consoled by the fact that the journey would be short and we'd soon be back on dry land.
We were rockin' and rollin' for sure.
We soon distracted ourselves again from potential sea-sickness with the awe-inspiring views.
Back on shore, we were sad to see a local man exploiting the seals.  He had enticed one of the seals to pose with visitors for pictures in exchange for buckets of fish each day.  I took this shot from a distance because apparently, the guy gets upset if you take pictures without paying.  At least the majority of the seals are living a free and wild life on the island.
