A Hike and More Monkey Business at Cape Point

Our Daytrippers tour of the Cape culminated at Cape Point.  We were excited to see ostrich grazing below us when we arrived.

We also spotted another Eland on a cliff overlooking the water.
We began to hike the trail to the Cape Point lighthouse.  David gave us about 45 minutes to do the climb and get back to the bus which was ambitious.
Despite time constraints, we opted to walk rather than take the funicular to the top (what fun is that?!)
We were again rewarded for our efforts with spectacular views.
We alternated between continuing the steady uphill climb and admiring the views.
The lighthouse soon loomed overhead.
Viewing platforms were marked out with stone walls.
Woot!  We made it to the very top.
We spun 360 degrees to drink in the landscape.
We quickly began to descend, not wanting to hold up our tour-mates.  We slowed down a bit when we noticed our Spanish friends still headed uphill.  We knew we wouldn't be the last ones to get back to the bus.
We spotted a couple of large birds on the trees below us.
We eventually arrived back at the car park, predictably well ahead of our tour-mates.
We took a walk around the area.  I was a bit alarmed to see this sign...
While we waited, we reveled as we watching the baboons trying to steal bags and water from unsuspecting tourists.  One family was particularly oblivious and had left their bags and camera practically unattended on the ground with a shiny waterbottle sitting there.  Sure enough, a baboon came in and swiped the water!
We enjoyed watching the baboons from a distance.  We hid our bags and water under our jackets so they wouldn't bother us.  Apparently, the baboons can be quite a nuisance to local residents.  You will be fined heavily if you feed them.  They are quite smart and we heard stories from at least a few people about baboons 'breaking in' to houses and ransacking the place.  All it takes is one loose window...
Our Spanish tour-mates finally arrived back at the van where we were all waiting.  However, oblivious once more, the woman decided to make a dash to the gift shop to get a postcard.  15 minutes later, David managed to cajole them back into the van and we were on our way back to Cape Town as the sun started to set.
I was so surprised to see the sight below on our return into the city...  A man was curled up under a tarp in the back of a flatbed truck!  Definitely not something you see everyday.
