Johannesburg - The Fight for Freedom and Equality in Soweto

We spent some time on our tour of Soweto in Kliptown's Walter Sisulu Square.  The Freedom Charter, written in 1955 is housed in the cone-shaped brick building.
The square also boasts the only hotel in Soweto: The Soweto Hotel.
We went over to take a closer look at the Freedom Charter.  When Mandela was finally freed from prison and a new constitution created at the end of apartheid in the early 1990s, many of the principles of the Freedom Charter were incorporated.
Here are some excerpts: The rights of the people shall be the same regardless of race, color, or sex.
The preaching and practice of national, race or colour discrimination and contempt shall be a punishable crime.
The people shall share in the country's wealth!
All shall have the right to occupy land wherever they choose.
All laws which discriminate on grounds of race, colour or belief shall be repealed.
All shall be free to travel without restriction from countryside to town, from province to province and from South Africa abroad.
Men and women of all races shall receive equal pay for equal work.
Education shall be free, compulsory, universal and equal for all children.
A preventative health scheme shall be run by the state.
There shall be peace and friendship!
There was a large X marked by the sun inside the Freedom Charter building.
The X's also prevailed throughout the surrounding buildings.  They represented the mark voters make on a ballot and spoke to enfranchisement for all.
After our tour of the square, we hopped back into the van and were treated to a bag of hot, local, deep fried treats by our driver.
Continuing to drive around the area, we saw political murals celebrating key figures in the fight to overthrow apartheid.
We passed the church where Bishop Desmond Tutu would preach and rally support for the fight.
We stopped at the Hector Pieterson museum (no photos allowed inside) which showcased the events leading up to the death of this small boy who was shot by police during a peaceful protest in Soweto that turned violent in 1976.
Continuing on, our driver Richard, introduced us to a Zulu chief.
We stopped at Nelson Mandela's house at 8115 Vilakazi Street, Orlando West.
Posters out front wished Mandela a Happy 95th Birthday from around the world.
We hopped back into the Themba Safaris and Day Tours vehicle to our next stops: a shebeen and lunch.
