Edinburgh Fringe - Getting our Bearings

We flew from London to Edinburgh and touched town in late afternoon.  We decided to go get something to eat and get our bearings before our first event of the Fringe Festival.  We wandered into Viva Mexico on Cockburn St. and were pleasantly surprised by the decent salsa, margaritas, fish tacos, and burritos.
It wasn't as good as the Mexican food in California but better than anything we've had in Dublin so far (except maybe Boojum).
We continued around the curve of Cockburn St. toward the Royal Mile.
We hopped on a bus to the Lauderville Guest House to check in and drop off our bags.  We were staying in a residential neighborhood on the outskirts of town.  As it was festival season, it was cheaper and quieter to do it this way. En route, we admired the impressive towers and steel gray stone of the local buildings.
The Lauderville Guest House was quite welcoming and a nice quiet place to call home for the week.
Unencumbered by our bags, we set off on foot to explore.  We walked back toward town and became acquainted with the Fringe Festival.  Posters large and small were plastered on every conceivable surface to woo potential fans to see the shows.  There were more than 2000 shows on offer at the Fringe and related Edinburgh festivals.
We passed Tea at 94 and couldn't resist stopping in for a spot of tea and piece of cake.
Eat Cake Live Well. I like this motto.
The strawberry cake was divine and complemented a pot of Russian Caravan Tea perfectly.
Continuing into town, we saw venues with the line-up on chalk boards.
This little gnome caught my eye on an apartment window.  He seemed to be just taking it all in.
Edinburgh has a sizable modern mosque which seemed to glow in the sun.
We had bought tickets in advance to Flash Mob, a So You Think You Can Dance style performance.
The Assembly Hall venue was super cool.
People milled about in a courtyard before heading in to the theatre.
We weren't allowed to take pictures inside but the show was fun and featured pairs of dancers showcasing a diverse set of styles from contemporary to Hip Hop to Irish step dancing.  Looking back, I'd say it was a little too commercial for the Fringe and I liked the more home grown shows that did more with less a lot better.

We did get to enjoy some sweeping views of Edinburgh's New Town from our vantage point.
The Olympic rings stood at the top of the hill reflecting the setting sun.
Heading onto the Royal Mile, we were amazed at the crowds, buskers, and folks generally trying to promote their shows.
Our strategy was to pick up some postcard sized bills for various shows and look them over at dinner.  We ate a quick and cheap meal including falafel and chicken kebab at Zenobia near Hunter Square before jumping back into the fray to see more shows.  More on that later!
