Switzerland - Up to Jungfraujoch

We took a 30 minute break to recover from our hike from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg. We were pleased to see this fellow promoting both bread and sweets.

We went in for a closer look and decided to sample some apple cake and coffee.
The cake slice was super-large.  It's a good thing we only ordered one to share!
We boarded the Jungfrau railway to Jungfraujoch situated at an altitude over over 11,000 ft.
En route to our destination, we admired the Alpine peaks in the vicinity.
The higher we climbed, the thicker the snow - impressive for June.
After a short ways, we entered a tunnel bored through the Eiger - an amazing feat of engineering.
We emerged at the train station at Jungfraujoch into a touristy cocoon protecting us from the elements.  We immediately made our way outside to really experience the place.  A hiking trail is marked into the snow.
We spotted a couple of hard core climbers making their way in after a day's adventure.
We spotted a helicopter taking tourists for rides in the surrounding area.
The path was carefully signposted so hikers wouldn't stray off the trail into dangerous territory.  Warnings of crevasses, etc. were posted all about.
"Mortal Danger" sums up the risk in no uncertain terms.
I left my footprints in the thick snow.  I wish I'd warn waterproof shoes or boots...
We even threw a few playful snowballs around.  The snow packed really well.  I think the moisture content was high given that it was spring.
We took one more look out over the green valley below and then headed inside to warm up.
As I mentioned before, the inside part of Jungfraujoch was a bit touristy but still good fun.  I enjoyed this lifesized snow globe showcasing local scenes.
A corridor of ice sculptures was fascinating.
We peeked outside at a second viewing platform and enjoyed more spectacular views.
After drinking in the view one last time, we descended by train to Kleine Scheidegg.  On the way down, we noticed that the Eiger seemed to be smoking.  There was definitely some kind of storm brewing.  It's good we came down when we did.  The mountains can be really unpredictable.
Safe and sound, we grabbed a savory bite to eat in Kleine Scheidegg.
We descended further from Kleine Scheidegg to Wengen.

Looking for inspiration on where else to go in the Jungfrau region? Why not visit Grindelwald over on Oz and Other Places?

We had a bit of time before our train to Lauterbrunnen and on to Zurich so stopped at the Rocks Bar for a quick beer.
Our journey back to Zurich took about 4 hours and included the descent from the Alps
...a ride along a silty and fast moving river...
...and the calm waters of the Alpine Lakes in the vicinity.
We even enjoyed dinner in Bern to make the most of our time in Switzerland - more on that next!
