Barcelona - En Route to La Sagrada Familia

La Sagrada Familia is one of Barcelona's top attractions.  We set out on a Sunday morning from Hotel Wilson along Avinguda Diagonal toward Gaudi's unfinished masterpiece.
En route, we spotted this wall that cleverly incorporated face and hands.
We enjoyed our stroll along the relaxing footpath of Avinguda Diagonal.
We discovered Oliva Bomboneria, a quaint bakery, on our walk and went inside to sit down for coffee and cake.
We opted for a sort of creme caramel and a dense chocolate mousse cake.
We enjoyed the old fashioned ambiance of the place.
Cakes were lined up temptingly in the window to lure folks with a sweet tooth (like us!) in the door.
With bellies full of sugar, we continued our walk toward La Sagrada Familia.  We passed a historic building which seemed out of place in Barcelona because of the severe lines and edges rather than the flowing facades that are more typical.
This sculpture seemed to depict a ship getting shot with a torpedo and definitely caught our eye.
Who goes there?...That's what this owl seems to be saying from his perch above the traffic circle.
We rounded the corner and La Sagrada Familia came into view.
We walked through the surrounding park and crept closer.
...and closer still.  It's an imposing facade.
The crucifixion scenes are signature Gaudi.
This large cathedral has been under construction for almost 100 years.  Gaudi met his death here when he was run over by a street car while supervising the works.
There is a small food market alongside La Sagrada Familia.
We took the opportunity to sit and admire the cathedral and its surroundings.
Continuing our walk around La Sagrada Familia, we admired the view from the back side.
My favorite part about the structure is the colorful fruit turrets.  That's not something you see everyday on a church!
We took one last look from close up and far away before headed off toward the Arc de Triomf.
