Tallinn Citybreak - Day 2

On our second day in Tallinn, we decided to walk along the waterfront.  Abandoned factories were a stark contrast to the lovely architecture of the old city.

A number of markets sit alongside the cruise ship terminal.
One arts and crafts vendor had a traditional Estonia milk drink (in quite a generous portion!) available to sample for free.  The clerk didn't know the English word for what was in it and I couldn't quite pinpoint it myself either.  It had a very burnt, woodsy, savory flavor.  I think it may have had rye or caraway seeds in it in addition to a loose yogurt.  It was worth trying once along with sweet and savory cookies.
We passed a petrol station with a 'BALLOONIGAAS' station out back.  I wonder if this is simply Helium?
A lovely old wooden church sat on an island surrounded by major traffic and intersections.
An old factory complex nearby was turned into a shopping mall (the Rotermanni complex).
I liked how various industrial elements were repurposed like these old plastic petrol storage tanks that doubled as seating.
The whole complex had an air of old meets new.
We made the obligatory stop at the Stockmann department store, one of the largest department stores in the region.
We had a quick snack in a local park nearby.
The birds were ready to snatch this pumpernickel cookie right out of my hand!
We slowly made our way toward Kadrioru Park.  En route, we saw another example of old meets new architecture...
...and a plaque commemorating Leo Kalmet, another key figure in the Estonian Theatre scene.
As we approached the park, we were impressed by the highly coloful homes nearby in pink and blue hues.
We appreciated the variety of fountains and water features in Kadrioru Park.
The pond even featured a nesting house for swans.
The trees seemed to go on forever.
Estonia is one of the most 'wired' countries on earth.  There was even WiFi available in the middle of the park!
We walked up a grand stairway to the Estonian President's house.
While there were guards outside pacing to and fro, we were surprised by the general lack of security.  There wasn't even a fence to keep passersby away.
We took a peek at Peter the Great's cottage.  Unfortunately, the museum was closed at the time.
We walked into the gardens at Kadriorg Palace.
Neptune with his trident was my favorite water feature.
We'd walked a fair distance so far (we did over 9 miles this day...) so we decided to take the tram back to our hotel.
After a brief rest at our hotel, we visited Restoran Olevi.  Located at the bottom of a steep staircase, we indulged on dumplings but avoided the fat platter we saw on the menu the previous day.
We finished off the evening with some mulled wine and chocolates at Kehrwieder.
The cafe was below ground once more but we were able to peek out onto the market square.  It was a fine treat to complete our day's exploration.
