Weekend in Philadelphia - Day 1

We lived in the Philadelphia area for 8 years but that was well before I started Sidewalk Safari.  I finally had a chance to go back to visit recently and properly document what the city has to offer.  We flew in to Newark Airport and took Amtrak to 30th Street Station in Center City Philadelphia.  30th Street Station features some cool art deco facets.
We couldn't have asked for a better day.  The sun was shining and it was warm -- t-shirt weather, really.  We walked across the Schuylkill River and admired the skyline including the Comcast Center.  It was under construction when we left 4 years ago.
Spring was definitely in the air and the trees were just starting to bud.
I love how old and new nestle together in the city.  Here we can see the Bell Atlantic Telephone building which has been converted into loft apartments.
We caught a glimpse of a historical church sitting at the base of the Comcast Center.
We stayed at the Sheraton City Center and saw a lovely sculpture in the lobby of two rather large business men shaking hands.  The imagery is pretty apt -- Philadelphia is known as one of the fattest cities in the US.
We took a walk toward City Hall.  Up until recently, it was decreed that no building in the city could be taller than William Penn's hat.  Clearly things have changed with the Comcast Center.
Love Park sits just outside City Hall.
Some cool sculptures are scattered around the city and are always a welcome surprise.  I liked this clothespin.
American flags flapped in the stiff breeze.
Since we're living in Dublin now, I was intrigued by this plaque on the side of City Hall.  It reads:

"In commemoration of the men of Irish birth or lineage, a few of whose names are here recorded who risked their lives and fortunes for America in the Revolution."

We captured the intricate facade of City Hall above the plaque.
The interior courtyard was lined with colorful urban murals.
We continued our walk toward Old City and saw more street art.
We chanced upon Philly Cupcake and had to pop in.  This definitely wasn't around when we lived here!
All manner of cupcakes were housed in colorful pastel shelves.  We tried the Jewish Apple and Irish Red Ale.  We brought them home to enjoy later.
They even had treats for your canine companion!
We walked through Society Hill.  I like the old advertisements on the side of the brick buildings in this part of town.
The architectural accents are also eye-catching.
A vortex sculpture outside Wills Eye Hospital was stunning.
We passed the Walnut Street Theatre, the oldest continuously operating theatre in the US.  We have fond memories of the plays we attended here.
In Old City proper, we passed the Chemical Heritage Foundation.  As a former chemist, it's great to see an institute and museum devoted to the history of the science.
Buildings like this one below are sprinkled throughout Philadelphia.  I love the old colonial architecture.
Philadelphia actually has more than its fair share of Cuban restaurants -- something that I really miss about living there.  We ate dinner at Cuba Libre and enjoyed a sangria with our side of plantains (I could totally skip the main course and just eat tostones!)
We walked past Christ Church at twilight...
...and stopped by the Liberty Bell on Independence Mall.
Lores!  I used to stop here nearly every morning for coffee and they also have a chocolate shop next store which is outstanding for an occasional old-fashioned treat.  I especially like their chocolate covered marshmallows.
We smiled when we saw Tastykakes in a nearly convenience store.  Butterscotch krimpets are another of my fond memories of Philadelphia.
We saw this cool lit sculpture projecting names of prominent scientists near Jefferson Hospital.
Here's City Hall again in the light of the full moon.
Ah...cupcake time!  A fabulous way to end the day :-)
Overall, we walked more than 6 miles getting reacquainted with Philadelphia.
