Take a Tour of the Haas-Lilienthal House in San Francisco's Pacific Heights Neighborhood

Haas-Lilienthal House in San Francisco
The Haas-Lilienthal House is a lesser known attraction in the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco.  We walk by the mansion all the time and had vowed to stop in when the Haas-Lilienthal House was open for tours.

The Haas-Lilienthal House is open only limited hours a few days a week so we made a special effort to go visit on a Sunday during their opening hours.

The tour of the Haas-Lilienthal House began outside with some information about the exterior of the home.  One interesting tidbit about these period houses is that the majority of ornate architectural detail was focused on the front of the house (the curb appeal...).  The lots in San Francisco are long and narrow so the sides of the house were typically not visible to passersby.  The grounds of the Haas-Lilienthal House were well kept and featured this beautiful flower partially in bloom.

We moved onto the porch of the Haas-Lilienthal House where we saw this lovely mosaic tiling.

Inside the Haas-Lilienthal House, the decorating and furniture were quite grand.  The docent talked about how the Victorian ladies of the house would regularly receive callers in the well-appointed drawing rooms.  The dining room had a more masculine feel as the man of the house would typically preside over the evening meal.

In the Haas-Lilienthal House's kitchen, there was a Pasteur "Germ Proof" filter jug.  After the great earthquake and fire of 1906, these jugs were required to purify the water before owners would be allowed to to restore their service.

The kitchen also contained MJB coffee cans, both antique and modern.  Max J. Brandenstein (the MJB of the brand) married into the Haas family.

One of the members of the Haas-Lilienthal family was fascinated by toy trains and this extensive set-up was operating in the basement for the enjoyment of the visitors.

In the Haas-Lilienthal House gift shop on the way out, I bought a most spellbinding book -- The Essential Handbook of Victorian Entertaining.  It goes over the minutia of different kinds of social interactions from daily calls to luncheons and tea, to extended visits and parlour games.  It's a quick and entertaining read...  The rules of high society were quite extensive in the Victorian era.  The foundations of social networking were quite different back in the day.  All visits and RSVPs were paid in person.  A 10-20 minute call was typical.  The book advises that a visitor should take their leave with the hostess wanting more rather than her wishing you to be gone.  We thought this to be excellent advice and we left the Haas-Lilienthal House...
