A First Timer at the Dublin Horse Show

This afternoon, we experienced another first for us in Dublin.  We went to the Dublin Horse Show to see what it's all about.

The Horse Show was a mix of festival and competition.
We started by wandering among the shop stalls before the competition began.
We opted for a frosted chocolate raisin muffin to go with our 2 euro horseshow-special coffee from Roly's.
A wide variety of wares were on offer.  From clothing and jewelry to woodcrafts.
Tourism Ireland was even pouring shots of Irish whiskey at their stall - a nice bracing way to start the day.
We chanced upon the impressive RDS Library as we were making the rounds.  There were two smells I recognized today -- books and horses.
We walked outside to check out the different competitions.  The rings were tree-lined and lovely in the sun.
The props around the different jumps were really interesting.  I liked this weepy green owl...
 ...and this riding boot.
We particularly enjoyed watching the "Accumulator".  It was unclear from the website prior to the event what it was.  Fortunately, the announcer explained the rules.  The riders would guide their horses through a series of 10 jumps.  They got points that compounded with each successful jump.  I successful jump = 1 point, 2 = 2, 3 = 3 and so forth.  For jump #10, the rider could choose between the safe jump or attempt "The Joker".  The Joker was worth 20 points but if the rider missed, he lost 20 points.  Very high stakes indeed!

We walked around the back of the Grand Stand on our way out and passed this stable of bars that are used in the jumps.
We also walked past the practice area and were able to get pretty close to the action.  These are definitely impressive animals.
You know who I think has the best job at the event?  This guy:

He stood at the finish line of the Fáilte Ireland Dublin Stakes in a lovely formal suit and bowler hat and waved his flag when the competitor completed the course.  Now this is a job I could seriously aspire to!
