San Francisco Walks: Safari to the Sea

I declared at the beginning of the year that my goal is to walk 1,000 miles in 2010 -- 100 more than in 2009.  So far, I'm on track for almost 1,200 miles.  I've walked an average of 3.2 miles per day so far--can you tell I love data? ;-).

I added some serious mileage to my totals today in my Safari to the Sea -- I clocked 9.2 miles.  I think that may be my longest Sidewalk Safari yet!  I walked down Sacramento to its terminus, met a friend for brunch on Clement St., and then decided to continue my journey west until I hit the Pacific Ocean.  Here are some of the cool things I saw along the way.

This window display at an antiques store on Fillmore illustrates once again why clowns are scary.
I loved this little "warm and fuzzy" felt gnome sitting in a window on Sacramento St.
Spring really has arrived.  Flowers were in bloom everywhere -- especially calla lillies.
This paper cutout made me smile.
Park Life on Clement has an amazingly colorful sign.
Produce vendors line the sidewalk on Clement St.  These grapefruit looked tantalizingly good.
I finally arrived at Q Restaurant after working up a good appetite on my walk so far.  Q has been featured on Guy Fieri's Diners Drive-ins, and Dives.  It's definitely quirky.
The interior decor featured magnetic letters that you could move around to spell cool words and phrases.
It's not quite taxidermy...but our table featured a giant spider under glass.
A large tree that was simultaneously festive and creepy adorned the back wall.  I had an egg white scramble with corn, peppers, and cheddar -- delicious!  I also had a lot of coffee which may explain why I had the energy to walk so far today :-)
After brunch, I continued west along Clement St. admiring the goods for sale.  You can get brooms of all shapes and sizes.
There were angry robots...
...phantom boxing gloves...
...and a building that looked like it had been cropped in half...
I nearly passed by this sign without taking a picture until the play on words sunk in:  "Cali Pho Nia" -- get your Pho in California.  Love it!
I passed some well coiffed shrubbery.
The Pho Garden claims to be the birthplace of the Pho Challenge.  I was intrigued and looked it up.  The Pho Challenge is 2 lbs of noodles, 2 lbs of beef in a large bowl of broth.  If you finish it in an hour, it's free.  Maybe another day...I had too much walking to do.
The 4 Star Theatre looked cool and shows Hong Kong films in addition to mainstream Hollywood flicks.
I was glad to see that I could become a Kung Fu Master at Tat Wong's Kung Fu Academy should the need arise.
In honor of Pi Day tomorrow, I decided to take a snap of this decidedly geeky sign for the Quantum Leap School.
I keep seeing billboards and clips on TV about the upcoming remake of Clash of the Titans.  The original is one of my favorite movies of all time -- so campy and fun.  This is one of those films that just shouldn't be messed with, in my opinion.  All I can say is...that's not the Kraken I know and love in this billboard...
I continued my walk into a ritzier section of town.  I detoured off of Clement onto Shore View Ave. to admire the beautiful homes.
I saw this old-timey car parked in the neighborhood.
More beautiful flowers...
Before long, I crested the hill and was rewarded with a spectacular ocean view.
I saw this Veteran's Memorial nearby which I thought was a nice sentiment.
I continued my way toward the water, stopping to take some fantastic pictures along the way.
I parked myself on a bench overlooking the Sutro Baths and just relaxed and enjoyed the sunshine and brisk breeze for a while.
It's currently the flowering season for mustard plants and the area was awash in bright yellow.
I tour another detour on my way to the bus stop and explored Sutro Heights Park.  The entrance is guarded by this majestic lion.

The park offers fantastic unobstructed views of the ocean and surfers below.
The park also featured this crumbling edifice.  I climbed up to an even better vantage point.
I saw this lonely, rusty fire hydrant back-stopped by what I think is a cypress tree.
I took the bus partway home and then made another detour down Arguello to get a snack and run a couple errands.  The Roosevelt Middle School features some fantastic and intricate brick work.

After all that walking, I was getting hungry again and my sweet tooth got the better of me.  I stopped in to Blissful Bites for a cupcake.  I'm not sure if Jess Loves Cupcakes has been here but if not, she needs to go...stat!

They had some amazing looking flavors attractively displayed which made it hard for me to decide.

I opted for the Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip cupcake.  It was moist and blissfully delicious -- definitely worth the stop...

I was going to take the bus home but it wasn't coming for about 20 minutes so I opted to walk the rest of the way instead.  My efforts were rewarded when I passed this odd front-door adornment on someone's home.  Bizarre...
Here's the route I took if you're interested in retracing my steps.
