The Paramount in Oakland: A Classic Film for a Classic Theatre

Paramont Theatre in Oakland - Art Deco
Last night we went to see a classic film in a classic theatre. The feature was It Happened One Night starring Clark Gable and the theatre was the Paramount Theatre in downtown Oakland.

We started our evening with a flight of wine and tapas at Franklin Square Wine Bar. I'm always tired on Friday evening after a busy work week so we popped in to Cafe Madrid to fortify ourselves with an espresso prior to the show. I loved this Picasso'esque painting on the wall.

The Paramount Theatre was simply amazing. The Castro Theatre in San Francisco is highly impressive but this place made the Castro Theatre look like a dump in comparison. We were confronted with art deco opulence at every turn. From the ceiling...

We then saw a period news reel, a Betty Boop cartoon, and a public service announcement featuring Jimmy Stewart advocating "The Brotherhood of Christians and Jews". They capped the pre-show entertainment with a few spins of the Dec-O-Win wheel. Alas, my number didn't come up and I was left envying the person that won a free haircut and a gift certificate to a local restaurant.

The only annoying part of the whole evening was that they confiscated our CamelBak water bottle even after we offered to empty out the contents. The usher said it was their policy because we might "throw it at someone". Funny...they sold plenty of water and other heavy items inside. Check out the display of contraband that they collected from theatre patrons. At least they lined things up so we could pick up our items on the way out.

Definitely check out the Paramount if you have the chance, just check your food and drink at the door.
