Bodega Bay Day Trip

We took a drive north of the City a few weeks back. Our ultimate destination was Bodega Bay -- a quiet seaside town made famous in Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. A macabre tone seemed appropriate for the day and we certainly found it when we stopped for coffee in Petaluma. We saw this nail studded heart and hatching skull outside Bus Stop Coffee (they make a fantastic Mexican Mocha with homemade chocolate).

Next up, we stopped to taste wine in the Russian River Valley. Graton Ridge featured this old timey truck in the front yard. It was a very charming establishment.

Our second stop was Marimar Estate. They had giant metal likenesses of the winery dogs standing guard over the vines.

The level of detail was amazing -- this guy even has eyebrows. Do dogs actually have eyebrows?

We finally arrived in Bodega Bay. There is a small strip of shops along the highway. We particularly enjoyed this antiques purveyor who also seemed to be a fan of taxidermy. The Christmas tree ball makes me thing that Rudolph may have met his end here...

Across the street from the antique shop was the church that was prominently featured in The Birds.
We continued west until we hit the coast. Along the way, we saw a number of fruit stands selling cherries. Yum -- my favorite!

We had a late lunch at a seaside restaurant and were greeted by this carved wood Cap'n.

This boat, Chaos, once again made me think of The Birds and the havoc they wreaked in the movie.

We were a little nervous when we saw a fair number of large gulls perched on the dock nearby...

This weathered old rowboat also looked ominous.

We had planned to drive back home down the Pacific Coast Highway (Route 1) but ultimately decided against it when the tourism office in Bodega Bay told us it was a 3-4 hour drive due to the winding roads. We were under the impression it was more like two hours. Thank goodness we stopped at the tourism office or we would have been very unhappy to end the day with an extended drive. Instead, we turned north for a few miles along the coast to reconnect with the highway a little further up. We were impressed by the number of kite shops near Bodega Bay.

I especially liked the parrots. One is riding a bicycle (above) and the other is piloting a bomber jet (below).

More birds congregating on the beach...Yikes!

We finished our road trip with a stop in Duncan Mills. There was a great little tea shop called the Horse and Butterfly with whimsical teacups in the garden outside.

Guerneville was our final stop. We enjoyed the shops along the main street, especially Nexus Organic Design and Floral. We also indulged in a quick hit of soft serve ice cream at Flavors Unlimited. The twist is that they take standard chocolate and vanilla and add flavors to suit your fancy and blend them to order. A sweet end to a fun day trip.
