Mini Cupcake Safari

Cupcakes weren't immediately on my mind when I got to Salt Lake City.  I was sitting at the counter enjoying lunch at the Lamb's Grill Cafe and reading the local newspaper when I saw an ad for Diva's Cupcakes and Coffee.  My sweet tooth prompted me to find out more.  I whipped out my Blackberry and did a search for "cupcakeries" in Salt Lake City.  Diva's came up on the results list but was quite a distance from downtown.  I saw a "sponsored link" for Mini'sCupcakes and decided to click on the ad.  It turns out that Mini's was only about six blocks from the Lamb's Grill.  Note:  these were LONG blocks.  Distances are a bit deceptive in downtown Salt Lake City.  I knew I couldn't face Jess from Jess Loves Cupcakes if I didn't check it out!

I hoofed it over to Mini's and was delighted by the store.

Cupcakes decorated pedastals in the window and tempted passersby to come in for a treat.

Cupcake crafts were also abundant.

This "Leg Lamp" reminded me of the one immortalized in A Christmas Story.

The menu featured a fantastic assortment of imaginative flavors for $2.00 each.  The flavor of the day was $2.25.
I selected six flavors to taste.  I tried (clockwise from the top left): "Breakfast at Tiffany's", "Smore Please", "Margaritaville", "Southern Comfort", chocolate with lavender frosting, and "PB Fix".

I started with "Smore Please".  The frosting taste life jarred Fluff.  The chocolate cake was moist and not too sweet.  The graham cracker accent was a nice touch.  The tasting was off to a nice start.
I ate the remaining cupcakes over a span of three days.  They actually held up quite well.  Here are my impressions.

Margaritaville  - This one was a lime cake soaked in tequila with lime frosting and crystallized sugar (to simulate a salt ring).  The frosting tasted a little odd on it's own but complemented the cake perfectly.  It was moist and tasty.  This was one of my favorites.

Chocolate with Lavendar Frosting  - I'm not used to eating lavendar.  I sometimes spritz some on my pillow to help me sleep.  I enjoyed the flavor combination but thought the frosting to cake ratio was a little too high.

PB Fix - The frosting on this one was thick and rich.  The chocolate cake was not too sweet which made for a nice balance of flavors.  Yum!

Breakfast at Tiffany's - This was the most traditional cupcake I tried.  It was a vanilla base with cream cheese frosting.  The cake tasted like it had a hint of lemon in there somewhere which I enjoyed.  This cupcake was super sweet and very cute with the little edible 'jewels' adorning the top.

Southern Comfort - This was a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting.  This was the last cupcake I tried and I was amazed at how moist it was after almost three days in the refrigerator in my hotel room.  The frosting was positively silky.  This one was a real treat.

I stopped in Utah Artists during my trip.  I saw these fantastic knitted cupcakes.

They are "fat free, calorie free, homemade...and a great source of fiber".  These were a product from Do Dads for You.  Unfortunately, I don't see the cupcakes on their website.

I noticed when I bought my original batch of cupcakes from Mini's that they were packaged well and easy to transport.

I had a few hours between when my conference ended and when I needed to be at the airport.  I decided to cook up a cupcake caper.  I bought six more cupcakes and brought them back to San Francisco for a tasting that evening with Jess from Jess Loves Cupcakes.  At Mini's they really care about their product.  When I told them I would be transporting their cupcakes more than 700 miles by plane, they shrink wrapped the box for me so they would stay fresh and avoid contamination by what I affectionately call "airplane funk".  The cupcakes made it home safely and I was able to rendezvous with Jess that evening for a tasting.  I'll leave it to her to render her expert opinion on Mini's offerings.
