One Act Safari

We went to see the Week 2 Line-up of the Bay One Act (BOA) Festival last night at the Eureka Theatre.  Five plays for $20!  You can't beat that value!

The program included:

"Marked" - a story of the relationship between a gay son and his increasingly mentally disturbed mother.  The play was simultaneously weighty and amusing.  The playwright, Cassandra Lewis, struck a good balance and showcased some fantastic dialogue.

"Over the Asian Airwaves" is a tale of an assistant radio station director balancing her personal relationships, high maintenance actors, and an overbearing benefactor.  The play was well acted and amusing but went on a bit too long.  At times, the staging and scenes were just too frenetic.

"Afterlife" - This gem was written by Jon Brooks.  He happened to be sitting behind us in the audience.  Very cool!  The play starts with a young man on his deathbed and proceeds to that irrational unknown place beyond death.  The play featured a random birdman, mini-basketballs, grown men in diapers, and a robot with electrified naughty bits -- a little something for everyone.  This play was the most imaginative of the night.

"22 Minutes Remaining" - This was my favorite One-Act of the Evening.  The acting was outstanding.  This play told the story of a man from the Israeli Defense Force charged with notifying people in Gaza that their homes were about to be bombed.  He ends up engaged in a dialog with Myriam, a civilian caught in the crossfire.  All she wants to do is find redemption in the eyes of her estranged son before she dies.  The tension is so thick you could cut it with a knife.  Fabulous!

"Goebbels! One Night Only!  Live From Hell" - This piece weaved humor and weighty social commentary.  Goebbels is a Nazi officer who finds himself tortured by devils in hell and even Satan himself.  He's forced to reflect on how the Nazis really did win WWII when you sit down and think about it.  It was an interesting mix but perhaps a little too long and thought provoking in its position as the last play of the night.

If you're looking for a fun, affordable, and imaginative evening out, definitely check out the Bay One Acts Festival.
