Weekend Kick-Off Safari

Inspired by my brief jaunt this afternoon (not to mention the need to burn off a few too many snacks indulged in during Happy Hour), I decided to embark on an extended safari on my way home from work.  I covered 2.5 miles which may not sound like that long of a distance compared to other treks I've reported but I did this one carrying a 20+ pound backpack and took an extreme uphill route as you'll see...

I saw this colorful mural on the corner of Mission and Steuart Sts.  According the plaque, it commemorates "Bloody Thursday" in 1934 when a maritime strike turned violent and claimed 3 lives.

From here, I traversed Justin Herman Plaza across from the Ferry Building.  It's hard to see, but this gnome is smoking a cigar.  I couldn't resist sneaking a snapshot of the merchandise.

Over the holidays, Justin Herman Plaza features an ice skating rink.  You can see the puddled remnants of the rink along with the coiled piping use to create it.

There was just something so appropriate about photographing this creepy statue in Justin Herman Plaza at night.

There is something very Gotham about this sculpture skirting San Francisco's Historic Jackson Square neighborhood.
I chanced upon two familiar places as I continued into Jackson Square.

We saw an on-stage version of Misery last year at the intimate Eureka Theatre on Jackson St.

I didn't realize that the Eureka Theatre was around the corner from Kokkari, a fantastic Greek restaurant that we went to a couple years ago when we were organizing our move to San Francisco from Philadelphia.
The Jackson Square neighborhood very much reminds me of Philadelphia with its historic narrow streets and brick town homes.

I was intrigued by Sarah Stocking, a purveyor of fine antique posters and prints.

I found this storefront to be a bit odd.  The spotlight is on the beautiful bronze piece but he seems to be flanked by a chainsaw blade.

I saw this plaque which describes how William Tecumseh Sherman founded a bank on the site and guided it through the Financial Crisis of 1855.  I'm not sure if I'm comforted ("we've lived through it before and we'll do it again!...") or disturbed ("why can't we learn from the past!...") by the fact that we are still navigating financial crises more than 150 years later.

Jackson Square features antiques of all shapes and sizes including this shop that sells coffee brewing equipment.
The written word is quickly becoming a theme of this safari.  This sentiment really resonated:  "I make simple things where technology is hidden, transparent things.  Since we are complicated beings, let us at least be surrounded by simple objects.  Otherwise, what a difficult life.  - Alberto Meda"

On into North Beach!  This poem was written on masking tape and posted on the sidewalk.  "Most are full-blown posers, squaws, robots and gossips, who contracted diseases of the spirit by confusing truth they found in some book with reality."  Heavy...

I loved the dog in this mural even though he's not attached to a fire hydrant :-)

More words grace the sidewalk on the corner of Columbus and Broadway.  I picked out a few phrases that I thought most identified with San Francisco.

At this point, I came to a crossroads.  I could either take the bus home or power up and over Russian Hill on foot.  I decided to do the latter and resolutely made my way up Broadway.   Woot!  I saw these cuties in a storefront at the nebulous border between North Beach and Chinatown.

Part of the climb up Broadway included these 166 steps.

I was a more than a bit winded when I got to the top but the view was worth it!  Look at the Bay Bridge and Transamerica pyramid sparkle!

Just to give you some perspective, take a look at my last post and notice how close I was to the Bay Bridge then!  I've covered a lot of ground and elevation!

After admiring the view, I made my way down the other side of Russian Hill and soon found myself on my own block.  I found one last curious sight on the way home that I'll leave you with.  What do you make of these gutted computer casings?
