Sunday Safari

It was another sunny and mild Sunday in San Francisco.  We clocked another 3 miles today on our trek to Hayes Valley and the Asian Art Museum.

It amazes me that yellow pages still get delivered door to door.  I haven't looked up a number or business manually in a number of years.  Seems like an outmoded resource.  Think about all the trees that are killed to make these books.  Who knows, since these were delivered right after the holidays, maybe they use the discarded Christmas trees to make our yellow pages.

On our stroll from Pacific Heights to Hayes Valley, we passed the Spanish Consulate.  So far on our safaris, we've seen the German, Russian, Greek, French, and Spanish consulates.  We live in a popular neighborhood for diplomats.

I thought these neighbors were an interesting contrast.
This mural graces the side of a building on Gough a couple blocks south of Geary.

More murals and some inspiring words as we continued down Gough.  I thought these shiny dancing ladies really captured the mood of the day.

Some wise words from Dr. Maya Angelou:  "If you find it in your heart to care for somebody else, you will have succeeded."
Our first destination:  Blue Bottle Coffee.  This popular storefront operates out of an inconspicuous garage on Linden at Gough.  Linden is a small blink-and-you'll-miss-it alley just past Hayes.
With cafe au lait in hand, I turned next store to check out the wares.  The Dark Garden claims to be a purveyor of unique corsetry.  I thought that sort of thing went out of fashion a century or two ago.  Perhaps corsets are making a comeback?

I'm not sure what to make of this police-monkey, "no more excuses" graffiti on a wall just up the block from Blue Bottle.

We sat and enjoyed our coffee at a park near Linden and Octavia.  This peace sign was popular for dads playing peek-a-boo with their sons.

This fanciful sign in the window of Moishe's Pippic caught my eye.  This Chicago-style Jewish deli wasn't open when we passed by but it looks like they have some delectable offerings to make it worth a return trip someday for lunch.

This dress was made out of paper!

We continued on to the Afghanistan:  Hidden Treasures exhibit at the Asian Art Museum.

The special exhibit was pretty crowded which was off-putting to me but there were some fascinating specimens on display including a wealth of gold medallions and charms that were sewn into the clothing of high ranking members of society.

We checked out some of the museum's regular exhibits as well (they allowed photographs whereas the Afghanistan exhibit did not...).  These attacking monkeys were striking.

These Indonesian rod puppets are not meant for children's theater!

We popped into the Heart of the City Farmer's Market at Civic Center after our tour of the museum.  I loved this great stack of dilapidated produce cases shining in the sun.

Yum!  Gold Rush Kettle Corn!  It comes in "Teaser", "Pleaser", and "Value Sizes".
