Dublin is a musical city but it's definitely a rarity to find a bluegrass band playing at JJ Smyth's (more known for Blues and Jazz). We were super-excited though to get tickets to see Greg Cahill and the Special Consensus. Cahill is one of the top banjo players in the world and founded Special Consensus in the mid-70s. What an amazing show with a great mix of fast paced, toe-tapping numbers!
It turns out that one of Greg's former banjo students from Chicago was sitting next to me so he came up to say hello during the break and wedged himself in between me and his banjo-playing protege. That's probably the closest I'll get to banjo greatness.
I hope JJ Smyth's decides to bring more bluegrass to town. You can't go wrong as far as we're concerned.
