Last week, an international tour de force in folk / Americana music gathered in the Unitarian Church on St. Stephen's Green for a concert thanks to Whelan's Live. The gig featured world famous banjo player and all-around American musician, Dirk Powell; versatile English flute and pipe player, Michael McGoldrick; renowned Irish guitarist, Francis Gaffney; and internationally renowned film actor and accomplished mandolin player, Brendan Gleeson. We filed into the rather solemn and spacious venue.
I love venues like this that bring you up close and personal with the band. In this case, there was an even a higher degree of 'we're all in this together' than usual as there were just two small toilets for a crowd of a few hundred people. My husband was waiting to use the loo when Brendan Gleeson stopped by. The band was about ready to take the stage again for the second set and the queue was quite extensive. By all means... My husband let Mr. Gleeson cut the queue for the loo.
Here are a few sample clips from a magical evening of music with a truly talented international crew.
