We lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for a total of eight years spanning two separate periods of our lives. However, it's only now that I've moved away and come back to visit as a 'tourist' that I'm coming to appreciate the spectacular regional parks that the area has to offer. I took time out on a Saturday during my recent business trip to stop into the Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge in Fremont.A boardwalk led from the parking lot out toward the San Francisco Bay.
Just a short drive away, I checked out the La Riviere Marsh Trail.
Great egrets fished below the expansive boardwalk.
I stopped into the visitors center and enquired about good places to look for birds. Apparently, there is better biodiversity in the wildlife reserve further south at Alviso. The volunteer guide was very helpful and gave me a map pointing out exactly where to go. Conveniently, I've be passing through Alviso on my way back to Mountain View. I would definitely be making a stop on the way.
