Granada Spain - Getting our Bearings

Ever since we moved to Europe 3.5 years ago, we take a trip for the holidays and immerse ourselves in a place, pretending that we are 'locals' for a couple weeks.  For Christmas and New Year's Eve 2013 we visited Granada and Málaga, Spain.  We touched down in Málaga airport and immediately boarded a bus from the city to Granada to spend Christmas.  Here are some photos of our impressions of the place.
The first thing I noticed when we arrived in Granada was the sleek geometrical lampposts on Calle Gran Vía de Colón.
A quick orienting walk around town showed us some of the finer details of Granada's architecture.
The cathedral was rimmed with what almost seemed like upside-down icicles.
The late afternoon sun caused the buildings around the central squares to glow.
Granada reportedly has some of the purest water in Spain (run-off from the Sierra Nevadas).  There are intriguing fountains all over town reminding us of this fact.
A small river flows through the center of the town.  We followed the water to Plaza Nueva and looked up at inspiring views of the Alhambra, Spain's #1 tourist attraction.
We spotted pomegranates everywhere we looked.  Pomegranates are the symbol of the city of Granada.
Moorish architectural details were everywhere.
Quiet courtyards provided a respite from the bustling streets.
Need to send a postcard?  Slide it into the mouth of this lion at the post office.
We liked these whimsical spiral columns that graced a number of government buildings in Granada.
Parks and green spaces were ringed by shops and bustling cafes.
A touristic market reminded visitors of the souks during Moorish times.
Beware!  The streets in Granada are really slippery especially if it's cold or has been raining.  On our first day in town, I slipped on the pavement and went crashing to the ground.  I was okay, but alas, my trousers were not :-/  Fortunately, I was wearing a long jumper to cover up the damage until we could get back to the hotel to change.  I definitely watched my footing more carefully after this!
