Thembi Safari and Day Tours took us to a shebeen near Nelson Mandela's former home in the Orlando West neighborhood of Soweto. The place was aptly called The Shack.
Richard bought us a carton of Joburg Beer. There was a stern warning on the back of the carton even though this 'beer' only had about 1% alcohol content: Don't drink and walk on the road, you may be killed.
We passed around the gourd and I took a tiny sip of the milky, sour liquid.
We stopped at Wandie's for lunch, a restaurant that has been open on this spot for more than 50 years.
We sat inside at long tables with messages from around the world posted on the walls.
Lunch was served buffet style and consisted of various African specialties including butternut, pap, and a spicy mashed bean mixture. It was all quite tasty.
Bellies full, we headed on our way to the Orlando Cooling Towers.
