Day Trip to Powerscourt

Powerscourt was one of the last remaining attractions in and around Dublin that we hadn't visited.  We set out on a sunny Sunday afternoon to pay a visit.  We took Dublin Bus #44 to Enniskerry and were dropped off in the town center.
From here, we faced an uphill climb to Powerscourt.
En route, we passed mysterious leafy stairways and quaint churches.
After about a half mile walk, we arrived at the property.
We entered through an imposing gate and passed an adorable gate house.
We walked in the shade of tall trees...
...and enjoyed spectacular views of the Wicklow Mountains in the distance.
Horses grazed lazily in the pasture.
Some of the horses came quite close to the footpath.
We finally arrived at Powerscourt, a Palladian mansion and associated grounds.
We set out to explore the extensive gardens.
I was particularly impressed by the riotous colors of the rose garden.
We continued on admiring floral specimens as we went.
We discovered a shabby fountain, an oasis among the flower beds.
An even larger pond was situated further along the path.
One of my favorite parts about visiting Powerscourt was the Pet Cemetery.  In contrast to the version of Stephen King fame (Pet Sematary), this one was quite charming and just overflowing with the love of owners to their lost friends.
We took some time to wander among the headstones

"Modger - faithful little friend for 9 years"

"Here lies Tiny, Pet of John Slazenger, a miniature long-haired dachshund. Died Aged 7"
Kilfane the Irish Wolfhound was represented, a species now extinct.
Even Eugenie and Princess, beloved cows that had produced more than 100,000 gallons of milk were memorialized here.
We continued on to a lake sitting at the foot of a hill.
We could see the Powerscourt mansion in the distance.
We followed the path through a grove of moss covered rocks.
We soon entered the Japanese garden.
We saw everything from lily pads and water flowers...
...to bright yellow flowers with soft bristles.
We spotted a stone tower in the distance and made our way over to it.
We passed well coiffed hedges en route.
Pointy wrought iron features adorned the entrance.
We climbed the tower and looked out at the mountains...
...and the mansion in the distance.
We made our way through a forest of ancient trees back toward the home.
We climbed down into the Italian gardens.
We admired this jaunty fountain from above.
Rough stones formed an intricate pattern on the terrace.
We concluded our visit to Powerscourt with a visit to Avoca onsite.  Salad with chicken and pesto really hit the spot followed by apple pie with whipped cream.
Appetite sated, we made our way back down the hill to Enniskerry and the bus back home.
