We spent our first morning in Izmir getting our bearings with a stroll around town. The sprawling outdoor market featured giant baskets of fruits and nuts...
...well dressed mannequins...and roasting chickpeas.
We even spotted the ubiquitous 'evil eye' (the blue and white glass emblem dangling on the back of this truck).
We were tempted by tasty honey and nut filled treats.
We tried something that tasted like pastry crafted from angel hair pasta. We learned later that it was the same type of pastry used in baklava just a different shape. The dessert was drenched in pistachios and honey.
Delving deeper into the market, we saw a furry bear grinding coffee.
The Izmir market featured a ton of over-the-top stores selling wedding dresses.
We also spotted period Ottoman costumes.
We walked down a sunny lane to an area dominated by housewares.
We found a brick topped interior section of the market.
Pressing further, we found a central courtyard featuring a variety of eats.
We saw a huge coffee roaster and sat down for a Turkish coffee.
The coffee was served with chocolate covered coffee beans, Turkish delight, and a cup of water.
We found sections of the market dedicated to yarn...
...and fruit juice (no wonder the pomegranate juice is so cheap here! The pomegranates were overflowing from the stall).
We spotted a covered section of the market paying tribute to Allah.
We emerged past souvenir stalls...
...and oh-so-practical porcelain...
...before continuing on to the Roman ruins for which the town is famous.
