April Fools Day in San Francisco: Saint Stupid's Day Parade

San Francisco loves an excuse for an over-the-top celebration.  Cue up the Saint Stupid's Day Parade.  Each year on April 1st, San Franciscans commemorate April Fools' Day by dressing up in their finest costumes and marching through the Financial District in a spectacle that includes the Sock Exchange at the Stock Exchange and the ever-popular Penny Toss outside the Bank of America Building.

Here are some pictures that capture the essence of a San Francisco institution that ranks up there with Bay to Breakers, No Pants Day, and the Urban Iditarod.

  1. I'm still bummed that we missed the Hunky Jesus Contest in the Castro, the last Easter we were in the Bay Area (1999). My parents had come out to visit and we couldn't think of a good way to extricate ourselves and run into The City for it. While my parents have no problem with gays or lesbians, they are Catholic and I think the contest probably would have offended them.
