2010 or 1910?

I knew 2010 was off to a great start in San Francisco.  We took a walk to Tully's in Pacific Heights for a quick shot of caffeine on January 1st.  We indulged in leftover holiday treats -- gingersnap lattes and gingerbread men.

Not only that, but we saw creatively recycled evergreens...

Imagine my surprise and delight when I saw a man whiz past us on a penny farthing -- one of those old timey bicycles with the big front wheel.  Priceless!  I could help but think -- was this 2010 or actually 1910?

New Year's Eve at the San Francisco Symphony

We decided to honor the ushering in of a new decade by getting dressed out and stepping out in San Francisco.  We opted for an early dinner at Jackson Fillmore followed by a night of music at the San Francisco Symphony.  Unfortunately, dress shoes are not Sidewalk Safari compatible so we motored around the City on Muni.  I was wearing a pair of strappy sandals that look really good but are so uncomfortable that I can only stand to wear them once a year.

Dinner at Jackson Fillmore was delicious.  It's the kind of locals' place where you feel like a regular.  We had an amazing julienned zucchini salad with shaved pecorino and shaved almonds followed by gnocchi covered in cheesy goodness.  We shared the spicy snapper entree.  I really liked the spicy tomato sauce.

The San Francisco Symphony was decked out with glitz and glitter.

The New Year's Eve party a masquerade ball so we snagged two feathery masks.  We heard later in the evening that they had run out of masks.  If you go to the Symphony for New Year's Eve, I definitely recommend taking the elevator the balcony level and scoring a mask right away -- you'll have the best selection just like we did.

Masks in hand,  we walked downstairs to check out the Martini Brothers performance.  People were having a great time dancing to the upbeat jazz vocals.

At 9 pm, we settled into our seats for the Symphony performance.   The pieces were all classics with a focus on Strauss.  Violin prodigy, 15 year old Chad Hoopes, made two appearances.  The conductor, Bramwell Tovey, kept likening the performance to New Year's Eve in Vienna so it was fitting that the evening ended with the Blue Danube Waltz.

The performance ended at around 11 pm and the champagne (actually Prosecco...) started to flow.

Tainted Love rocked out to covers from the '80s along the First Tier.  More classical ballroom music played inside the concert hall.

As the countdown approached, everyone piled into the concert hall for the final countdown.  At the stroke of midnight, two thousand balloons were released from the ceiling and much revelry ensued.

We enjoyed playing more name-that-tune with Tainted Love and then headed home around 1 am.  Muni was offering free bus service on New Year's Eve and everyone seemed to be taking advantage of it.  We pushed our way onto the Night Owl bus and there wasn't a square inch unoccupied.  What a way to start off 2010 -- so close to our fellow San Franciscans.  Good times.  Cheers!

900 Miles in 2009

As each year comes to a close, I like to reflect on all the ground I've covered.  This year, I literally covered a lot of ground -- 900 miles worth!  Thanks to Google Maps for helping me keep track.  All this mileage definitely shows in the wear and tear on my Safari shoes.
I've had a fantastic time roving the City and sharing my photos with everyone this year.  San Francisco is truly an amazing place to explore on foot.  I'm looking forward to continuing my walks and reporting on all my Sidewalk Safaris here.

Have a fantastic New Year!  Here's to 1000 miles in 2010!

Cheers,
Dr. J

Winter Wonderland

The holidays transform San Francisco into a Winter Wonderland.  It never snows here but these window displays made me think of colder climes.

Happy Birthday Transamerica Pyramid!

I learned from Only in San Francisco that the Transamerica Pyramid is celebrating its 40th Birthday this month.

I caught this snap on Christmas Day.  The pyramid is so versatile that it can also double as a Christmas tree.

Happy Birthday to an iconic part of the San Francisco skyline.

Double Down

Muni juggled the bus routes in early December making it less convenient for me to get home from work.  On the bright side, I now have even more Sidewalk Safari opportunities than before.  I caught a glimpse of this party decor near one of the #12 bus stops downtown.  Someone had clearly doubled down on their holiday party plans.  Very cool.

Maple Bacon Latte

I had heard rumors of a maple bacon latte in San Francisco.  We set out yesterday to find it.  Our destination was the Pirate Cat Radio Cafe in the Mission.  We took the #27 Muni bus from Van Ness and Washington to Bryant and 21st and started our walk from there.  I was amused when we arrived at the bus stop and there was a parking meter next to the Muni sign. The sidewalk was painted with yellow "we'll tow you if you park here" paint.  I definitely felt like this space was sending mixed messages.
We hopped off the bus in a much more colorful part of town.  Murals graced nearly every conceivable surface.  This house was fancifully painted.
Pirate Cat Radio Cafe was only about a block from the bus stop.
We arrived at around 11:30 am and the place was nearly deserted -- apparently things don't pick up until later in the day.  There was some fun and funky Spanish hip hop playing from an old-fashioned radio on a stool out front.  Old school radios really set the ambiance of the place.
I saw the object of our Sidewalk Safari on the menu -- a maple bacon latte in the wild.
I was a bit concerned when the barista-by-day, rocker-by-night behind the counter looked at me sheepishly.  I feared that our journey down here had been for naught.  I thought maybe they were out of maple syrup...or bacon fat...or bacon bits...three essential items for this beverage.  Alas, they were simply out of milk.  Our new friend offered to run across the street to the local convenience store and pick up a gallon so we could indulge in their specialty drink.  Crisis averted :-)

We took a seat and admired the in-house radio studio while we waited.
The barista returned and I was soon sipping my maple bacon latte.  It came complete with bacon pieces sprinkled on top.
It was actually quite tasty -- kind of like a diner meal of pancakes and bacon with a cup of joe.  I did discover that the bacon pieces tend to settle so beware if you try one of these.  My last few sips were a little too infused with smoky bacon goodness.  In a stroke of irony, we paired the maple bacon latte with a couple of vegan donuts.
After finishing our treat, we set out on a walk around San Francisco's Mission neighborhood.  We covered about 2.2 miles in total.

We saw some fantastic garage door art covering disparate themes from Cala Lillies to Medusa.
We chanced upon an old-fashioned Italian deli and supermarket called Lucca's.
We bought a package of homemade pumpkin ravioli and some biscotti (divine!).  The store felt like a hold over from another era.
They even rang us up on a manual, brassy cash register.
I definitely recommend stopping in if you're in the neighborhood.
We also stopped by a hipster gallery called Fabric8 and picked up a framed poster by acclaimed mural artist Sirron NorrisFabric8 also had a unique fish tank -- a claw footed bathtub!
The fish themselves were my favorite kind -- the fancy goldfish that look like their brains are on the outside.

We were hungry again by the time we passed this mustard and mayo wielding cowboy clad pickle.
We decided to stop in to Mr. Pickle's Sandwich Shop for a quick bite.  Their chicken sandwich with pepper jack cheese on Dutch Crunch bread really hit the spot.
On the way back to the bus, we saw this fence covered with interesting cutouts including a Muni bus, Krusty the Klown and a sun wearing shades.
We also caught a glimpse of John Candy immortalized in street art.
...and a garage door that had been painted by the same mural artist whose poster we bought at Fabric8!
Our bus ride concluded with a sighting of one more interesting cut-out:  a melacholy robot on an upstairs stoop.
We'd found some great food for both the stomach and the eyes -- two signs of an excellent Sidewalk Safari.
