Wisconsin Weekend - Part VII - Milwaukee

Milwaukee was our final stop. We popped into Cedarburg on our way into town. Amy's Candy Kitchen featured a variety of mouth watering candy apples.

We even had the opportunity to watch the candy apple assembly line.

Milwaukee is known for its RiverWalk so we decided to take a stroll along the water. Art and sculpture line the route -- like this indignant duck.

I almost couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it -- The Bronze Fonz! Fonzie from Happy Days is forever immortalized along the RiverWalk in his leather jacket and blue jeans.

Much of the art along the RiverWalk was made using 'found' objects.
Ballet dancing on a cow -- not a combination you see every day, but a pretty and colorful installation.

I was struck by this house in downtown Milwaukee. It seems to be a lone hold-out from the past. I wonder how long this classic structure will remain standing before giving way to a nondescript parking lot like the one behind it.

We stopped at the Water Street Brewery to quench our thirst before the walk back to the hotel.

These giants lady bugs on a building in Downtown Milwaukee are most definitely 'safari-worthy'.

Fish Fry is a must-do in Milwaukee. Friday is the night for Fish Fry but we were in town on a Sunday. Molly Cool's Seafood Tavern came to our rescue by serving all-you-can-eat Fish Fry all week long!

The next day, we took a long walk from Downtown to the Pabst Mansion. On the way, we saw some interesting trolls/gargoyles embedded in the architecture of the city.

Milwaukee is a brewing town and we heard the story of Frederick Pabst and how he built a beer empire. He built an elaborate home for his family just a couple miles away from Downtown. The tour was incredibly detailed and lasted about an hour and a half. We heard about the house's architecture, family history, and a lot of detail around what it takes to preserve and restore a house museum like this. We were impressed that they employ a curator who keeps an eye on auctions, garage sales, and tracks down extended family members to purchase the original furnishings and artwork from the home that had been sold or otherwise lost to the estate. Fascinating tour!
We took a brief jaunt into the Historic 3rd Ward where we saw this fireman and his faithful dog taking a quick break.
We drove past the spectacular Milwaukee Art Museum...

and along Lake Michigan...
...to the Upper East Side. We saw more holiday flair in front of a local church.

We stopped at Cafe Hollander for an incredible lunch that included a rather murky looking but delicious tasting beer from Lakefront Brewery...

...a hot soft pretzel with a selection of dipping sauces...

...and bitterballen, a Dutch favorite treat.

After lunch, we squeezed in one last stop at the Miller Brewery.

Miller offers a free hourly tour every day. We got to see the equipment used to brew, bottle, and distribute the beer.

We got to see some of the historic buildings and beer caves within the massive complex.

I think most people's favorite part of the tour was the free beer at the end. Each guest was treated to three large samples of Miller Light, Miller Genuine Draft, and a "Surprise". Unfortunately, we were late for our plane and had to skip the third sample so I don't know what our surprise would have been.

On our way back to the car, I noticed a particularly industrious homeless man collecting cans at the brewery. Going to the source -- that's good thinking.

We arrived at the airport with time to spare. Our trip concluded with a chuckle when we saw this "Recombobulation Area" sign just past security in the Milwaukee Airport. I did indeed feel slightly discombobulated after our hectic weekend exploring Wisconsin and the usual adventure getting through airport security. I'm glad they set-up a zone for us to put ourselves back together before boarding the plane. Nice!
