We Want the Funk

Sunday was simply jam-packed. After brunch, the baseball game, and dinner, we still weren't ready to call it a day. I won a pair of tickets on Twitter from SF Station to see George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic at the Regency Ballroom. Nothing beats funk music and I wasn't about to pass up the chance to see P-Funk in concert. The event listing claimed that the event would start at 9 pm. We arrived and quickly learned that George Clinton wouldn't be taking the stage until 11 pm. It looked like I would definitely be up way past my bedtime all in the name of gettin' down just for the funk of it.

The show started with Shaunna Hall, a member of P-Funk performing some of her hard, Electrofunkadelic tunes. She used the screen behind her to project videos to accompany the songs. It was all a little surreal.

Next, KATDELIC took the stage. He's also a member of P-Funk. He reminded me a lot of Prince and I enjoyed his performance. I also think that the best funk has the word 'funk' in the lyrics and most of KATDELIC songs did. Funk on!

At 11:30 pm, after much fanfare and waiting, George Clinton and P-Funk finally took the stage.

The show started on an ultra funky note with "We Want the Funk". Things were looking up. The costumes were outrageous. One guitar player was wearing only a diaper. One band member came on-stage in a wedding dress. Even Sir Nose made an appearance. George Clinton's granddaughter took the stage and entertained with some hard-hitting rap on subjects that I would never sing about in front of my grandpa...

Then the vibe changed and took on a hard psychadelic quality. Some of the concert goers really seemed to like it. Me? I came for the funk and the funk left the house early. At one point, a guitarist came out in a furry red white and blue hat and riffed for like 20 minutes on his guitar to Maggot Brain. Because of this diversion, George didn't even get to play some of his true funk classics (not playing Atomic Dog is a travesty!). They cut the power on the amplifiers promptly at 1:30 am to comply with a local curfew. Leave it to Dr. Funkenstein to try and keep the groove going. Even without instruments, he still had the audience chanting to tear the roof off the sucker.

The concert was an unforgettable experience but even though George opines "Who says a funk band can't play rock?", I say stick with the good stuff -- keep the funk uncut next time.
