Sunday Safari in New York

When we awoke on Sunday morning, the smoke from the Fourth of July fireworks in New York had dissipated to a lovely sunny day. Here's a peek at the daytime view from our terrace at the Hotel Affinia.

We covered a lot of ground--more than 8 miles! We started by walking to Greenwich Village for brunch.

We passed this pensive statue of William Seward surrounded by greenery in Madison Square Park. Seward is best known for his 'folly' -- purchasing Alaska for the U.S.

We continued on down Broadway to the Corner Shop Cafe for brunch. I opted for healthy oatmeal while my husband ordered the peanut butter and banana sandwich served on raisin french toast. The decor was delightful although the cuisine was a bit high priced for what it was. A Cafe au Lait was $4.50.

We continued down Broadway toward Civic Center. We saw this abandoned building propped up by steel beams. It was a lovely old building and I hope it survives the construction around it.

We also walked past the masterful Woolworth building. This was the tallest skyscraper in New York City near the beginning of the 20th century. They simply don't make buildings like this anymore with an incredibly ornate facade. We couldn't help but be 'wowed' by the edifice.

The park surrounding City Hall features a gorgeous fountain and real gas lamps.

We powered halfway over the Brooklyn Bridge.

How appropriate for Independence Day weekend -- we caught a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty standing proud over the East River.

We decided to take the subway from the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge to Grand Central Station.

This is a true American icon of transportation. We strolled along Park Ave. and admired a number of the sculptures that dotted the median in the road. This one reminded me of a salt crystallizing.
This one made me think of a polypropylene molecule.

We also saw these interesting bunny statues in entryway of a nearby skyscraper. It's hard to see in the picture, but there is stream of tears flowing from her eyes.

Fortunately, this gal is a bit happier. Hopefully her mood will rub off on her neighbors.

We walked into a local bookstore near Central Park. I saw someone asleep in the stacks. I guess you can't beat a bookstore for a place to sneak a quiet little nap.

More ornate buildings ringed the blocks around Central Park. Alwyn Court even showcased fire-breathing dragons!

We took the subway again from Columbus Circle to Riverside Park. The Soldiers' and Sailors' Memorial was beautiful against the clear blue sky.

We caught a glimpse of some sneaky gargoyles dotting turn-of-the century townhomes on the Upper West Side.

This was a surprising sight: a Fallout Shelter. This wasn't the only one we saw during our walk.

I thought this fire escape was especially lovely. They are usually so utilitarian and ugly but the architects seemed to go the extra mile here since this one graces the front of the building.

After over 8 miles of walking, we made our way back to our hotel for some well deserved rest. What a great urban outing! Here's a map of the second and third installments of our walk.
