Bagel Safari

Good bagels are hard to find in California.  So-called Bagelries cut corners and steam the bagels rather that boiling them.  The result is tasty but not authentic.  Fortunately for us, the House of Bagels delivers the real deal.  They also sell the ever-popular black and white cookies and hamantaschen.   We decided to go on a bagel safari this morning.  In the process we clocked 3.5 miles on foot and returned home by way of MUNI after a satisfying breakfast.

En route, we passed this lovely rose garden.  This was particularly stunning considering it's December 28th!

Milk as art? "Moona Lisa, A Classic Pitcher"

The free newspaper, the San Francisco Examiner was strewn in front of condos and apartment buildings along our way.  We'd gotten a fairly early start, but not that early...Apparently, the residents of Pacific Heights like to sleep-in.

Storefronts along Sacramento Street in Presidio Heights were a visual treat.

A local wine shop on California St. in Laurel Heights tempted passersby with deals on New Years Eve champagne.

We passed by Noah's -- one of the chain shops in California that poses as a bagel bakery.  We walked right on by their steamed-bread-with-a-hole-in-the-middle offering and continued another 1.2 miles on foot to House of Bagels.

The head of Clement St. (San Francisco's 2nd Chinatown) features Better World Books, a charitable bookstore that promotes literacy around the globe.  I loved the sentiment in their store window:  "Read...What...You...Want...Just...Read...Responsibly".

Aging hippies?...  We passed this fanciful VW bus parked on Clement St.
Hooray!  We made it to the House of Bagels!  My salt bagel with butter and half a black and white cookie was worth the wait and the walk!

Mission Accomplished!
